The Kenai eninsula The Chugach Mountains run into the northern section of the Kenai Peninsula, but the southern end is home to the Kenai Mountains, backcountry heaven. Helicopters rarely venture here, so it's all up to you and your backcountry knowledge. These mountains are protected from the harsh Alaskan winds and consistently boast large amounts of snow. The mountains around Turnagain Pass can be accessed directly from the Seward Highway. Park the car, then take your pick of the numerous peaks surrounding you.
