most in the we d, the Hamptons host literally hundreds of sand-bottom beach breaks that shift back :~~i~~~~~:= and forth year after year. From Westhampton Beach to just before Montauk, ~-, there are several well-known spots to get wet. Remember: poor parking and - ---,-.. localism run strong here. Try Westhampton Beach, the jetty at Shinnecock Inlet and several beaches (with and without jetties) in Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton and Amagansett, all the way eastward to Napeague. To get to the Hamptons by car, take the Long Island Expressway to Exit 70. Go south on Route 111 to 27 East, which becomes the two-lane Montauk Highway and heads straight into the heart of Hamptons territory. If you don't have a car, the Hampton Jitney (800-936-0440) allows bagged surf- boards in the cargo bays for $10. Call ahead, though, it gets busy in the summertime. Non-resident parking permits can be purchased from the Southampton Town Office (516-728-2530), or the East Hampton Town Clerk (516-324-4142). Call Main Beach Surf and Sport in Wainscott for more infor- =r;;~i~~;t.~;';: mation (516-537-2716), or their surf report at 516-537-SURF(7873). DITCH PLAINS, LONG ISLAND Ditch Plains in Montauk is where things get interesting: here the sand bottom gradually turns to rock reef, thus holding a larger, faster, steeper wave. Ditch, possibly the most consistent point break wave on Long Island, is actually a series of breaks from the longboardable left and right point, suitable for begin- ners, to nice inside sand-bottom wedges. At Turtle's Cove, at Montauk Point, there is a left off the point and a barreling right that has been known to reach 15 to 20 feet in height. Beware: you need to be a strong surfer, as the pad- dle can be a couple of hundred yards out through some heavy thumpers, and the lineup can fill up with as many as 75 aggressive surfers who all want theirs. Parking at the Point will cost you four dollars. If you are autoless, take the Hampton Jitney to Montauk Village and make your way from there.
