THREE HOUR RADIUS MOUNT MADONNA CENTER Type of yoga: Ashtanga The great modern-day Indian saint Baba Hari Doss inspired this beautiful center located in the Santa Cruz mountains. After practicing yoga directly from a silent holy teacher, Baba Hari Doss took his own vow of silence 47 years ago. He now communicates using a little chalkboard. The cen ter offers pre-sunrise practices including chanting, yoga poses, pranayama and meditation. They also offer four-day retreats. Class Cost: Morning classes are free. Some of the classes are taught in a heated room and the teachers offer lots of hands-on instruction. The intense classes focus on physical postures, breathing exercises and deep relaxation. Kent, the owner of the school, began studying yoga after suffering a serious back injury about ten years ago. He continued with his study and eventually founded the school in 1996. Classes meet seven days a week and the studio hosts a number of different workshops. After class, don't forget your shoes. Students have been known to feel so good, they walk off barefoot. This small school, located in a brick building on Alma Street in Palo Alto has a crew of talented instructors and challenging classes. The Monday night Ashtanga class (7-9 PM with Mark Sierra) really kicks, and the proceeds are donated to local charities. Be sure to get there early, and bring a mat and a bottle of water. The class has a dedi cated following and fills up quickly. Kali Ray started her first school in Apri l 1986 and opened a sec ond one, also in Santa Cruz, in June 1997. Fi rst she mastered Hatha yoga and then pioneered her own style cal led TriYoga. Each session offers a structured intense workout for both beginner and advanced students. There is a ful l schedule of yoga classes, meeting seven days a week. In addi tion to the regular sessions, the center offers an array of courses on specific aspects of yoga, med itation and vegetarian cooking. More advanced students should check out the Sunday evening class.
