the equivalent of going to the Moon and back 16 times a day just to fetch water. Nearly 16 million South Africans travel by foot at least one kilometer to supply their families with basic water needs. They have only half the freshwater per person that they had in 1960, and the population is growing four times faster than the water supply. Another major consumer of water consumption is the trees planted by European settlers who missed the woodlands and parks of their homelands and scattered seeds on their walks. Forty thousand South Africans are now working to clear invasive species from their forests and grasslands but it's still estimated that in 50 years half the country's rivers will run dry. -MAUDE BARLOW + TONY CLARKE
