5> TEMPLE OF SOUND & RIZWAN-MUAZZAM QAWWALI Peoples Colony No. 1 (Real World) The legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan did more to introduce the sacred vocal fo rm of qawwali to the global communit y than any other qawwal. Picking up where he left off, nephews Rizwan Mujahid Ali Khan and Muazzam Mujahid Ali Khan released t his second album in late 2001 with co llaborators Neil Sparkes (Transglobal Underground) and Count Dubulah. (They have since released an incredible traditional qawwali disc, A Better Destiny.) I ncorporating more-than-danceable rh ythms into the brothers' devotional cho- ruses, Peoples Colony NO. 1 breaks ground fo r the future of the qawwal. Repeatedly chant- ing verses of mystic poetry, the listener is subdued by the voice beyond simple words. The production duo of Sparkes and Dubulah infuses poignant handclaps and tabla loops into a steady background of bass and drums to align hips with heart. The res ult is devotion for the 21st century: Faith in ancient music atop the resonant beats of futurism. 6> SULTAN32 Eru'th n Bass (Triloka) Spearheading the eclectic NYC-based Globesonic parties for years , Sult an32 releases his firs t compilation of bass-banging, international sounds fused by ecstatic beats. Remixes of Manu Chao, Tarika and Bebel Gilberto blend with efforts by Karsh Kale, Momo and Sultan32 himself. (His opening "Dias Futuros" is destined for many DJ sets worldwide.) Gigi's Ethiopian quietude is juiced up by Bill Laswell's house mayhem with "Zomaye"; Ex- Cent ric Sound System rocks the percussive dance floor on "Ebaye"; Krishna Das's devo- t ional chants on "Baba Hanuman" are supercharged and dubbed out .
