VERMONT KILLINGTON KILLINGTON, VT Killington is the Beast of the East. It's a mantra that has been chanted over the years and still rings true today. It has the longest ski and snowboard season in the east and the seven peaks of Killington are home to a stack of statistics that burn most other Eastern resorts outright. All this place plus lifts, snow-making and notorious terrain are some of Killington's claims to fame. On the other hand, the resort's size can be as much a hindrance as a help; it's easy to get tangled in the long traversing trails, intersected reg- ularly by more orthodox downhill runs. Killington Peak has the majority of the expert level terrain, although Bear Mountain, locat- ed over the East Ridge, has its own tests and two new quads. MT SNOW/HAYSTACK WEST DOVER, VT Mt Snow and Haystack joined forces several years ago; the mar-~ riage means the resort now tops the East for lifts, and only ~ Killington has more trails. On Mt Snow the most challenging ter-~ rain lies on the North Face, where the trails are steeper and the Q glades more testing. The Main Mountain has good intermediate and beginner cruising terrain. On the opposite east-facing side, the Carinthia Face magnetizes riders with the Gut halfpipe at the bottom. Haystack Mountain holds moderate terrain with a few out- standing runs in the Witches and the glades surrounding them. STOWE STOWE, VT At 4,393 feet, Mt Mansfield is the highest peak in Vermont. e Stretching over three faces and the valleys between, Stowe ~ delivers demanding terrain off the lifts and off trail. An abun- dance of waterfall cliffs and tree riding on the north-facing W A A slopes makes them the most challenging freeriding areas. The western face plays host to the gondola and its hard-boot disci- ples, while freestylers can hang out in the pipe, just above the gondola base.
