RE B[OE [1ST OF BOOKS TO NOTE TEXT: JOHN CAPONE 2> GLOBETROTTER DOGMA: 100 CANNONS FOR ESCAPING THE RAT RACE AND EXPLORING THE WORLD (Bruce Northam, Avalon) "Adventure begins where the pavement ends." From the blue series "Globet rotter Dogma," t his compilat ion merges blue writer-at-large Bruce Northam's travel tru ths into one volume. 3> TRIP (Susan Lipper and Frederick Barthelme, powerHouse Books) Leafing through Trip is like watching a Jim Jarmusch film . The photo- graphs and text are a se ries of moments captured and laid out entire ly open to interpretation. The book is at once voyeuristic and personal even while containing no photographs of actu al people. We see pictures of people tacked on a wall, notes that they left, belong- ings scattered throughout an empty hotel room or a breakfast plate with a bite taken f rom the toast. The book co uld ju st as easily be the journal of an imagined t rip acro ss America as the document of an actual one. In the end it's left to the reader to decide. 4> ON THE LOOSE (Terry and Renny Russell, Gibbs Smith Publisher) "Adventure is not in the guidebook and beauty is not on the map."-Terry Russell This book was f irst published by the Sierra Club in 1967 after the brothers Russell returned f rom their travels through the American West with a leather-bound book fu ll of handwritten calligraphy alongside photographs of th eir journey. The book became something of a wilderness cult classic and a seminal work of the environmental movement. Now, 34 years late r, it's being republished. 1> WE APPROACH OUR MARTINIS WITH SUCH HIGH EXPECTATIONS (Jamie Brisich, Consafos) "I was born to swing Louisville sluggers at pinatas in the courtyards of Mexico City. 1 was born to twirl about the stratosphere with sights of Brasil in my stethoscope. 1 was born to silently yearn for Portugese words to describe my American feelings. 1 was born from fertility and the promise of a post WWII dream. 1 was born to drink in coffee col- ored flesh and dream 3rd world hallucinations. 1 was born to ultimate- ly fall in line with ageless wisdom and allow the whole process to repeat itself ••• " So begins Jamie Brisick's first book, a collage of words, images and found objects presented in t rue Brisick style. From here, the book spirals through the Rio during Carnival, Paris over the Millennium, Tavarua (Fij i) during suvan riots and surf ing contests, orgasms, Australia and the sport of kings. 5> BLUE FRONTIER: SAVING AMERICNS LIVING SEAS (David Helvarg, WH Freeman and Company) David Helvarg, a journalist, NPR radio commentator, and avid scuba diver and surfer, takes a hard news approach to addressing oceano- graphic issues. Politics figure into the equation as heavily as science as Helvarg traces a tangled path f rom the United Nations through the CIA (there is enough covert activity here to keep a Tom Clancy fan happy), Congress and the White House. But the book is not merely a laundry list of what's wrong with the environment and the causes, for after explor- ing these issues Helvarg details clear and practical solutions. 6> REEFSCAPE: REFLECTIONS ON THE GREAT BARRIER REEF (Rosaleen Love, Joseph Henry Press) "Air and sky are left behind, the sea washes over, and it is a different sel.f that dives down to meet whatever moves below."-Rosaleen Love Reefscape is a love letter to the Great Barrie r Reef. Part travelogue, part history of the region, Reefscape is like taking a dive without getting wet. 73
