~ letters to the editor:: THE 9/11 ISSUE WHAT ABOUT RED, WHITE & BLUE AS A NAME? I read th is issue of blue on top of Half Dome in Yosemite. It was November 19, 2001, and it was one of the most peaceful days of my life. I love your magazine. Pepper Wareagle Saratoga Springs, NY VANS Just wanted to drop YOll a line and congratu late blue on the 9/11 issue. It's the best New York cover I've seen on any magazine and one of my favorite blue covers ever. Jason Ditzian San Francisco I just wanted to let you guys know your magazine is beautiful. I picked up the 9/11 issue with "New York" printed in white on red in various typefaces. You completely fooled me into thinking I had picked up a design magazine, though I wondered a bit about the ads for hiking shoes. Congratulations either wayan putting together one of the few tastefu l magazines I've seen, and the only one published outside of the graphic design community. Kathleen Brown Lakewood, NJ While many magazines have had a patriotic theme recently, your American Flag New York cover stood out as one of the most tasteful patriotic statements on the post 9/11 newsstand environment, along with The New Yorker. The most distasteful and offensive of all was Rolling Stone, who put a red, white and blue background behind Britney Spears whose clothes were basically falling off. Is this the America we want to be proud of? Is this the sensational- ized sexuality that Americans want to characterize our media? This is exactly what (flakes outsiders feel we are soulless. This is the American mass media's dishing out and force-feeding the American public. blue's tasteful cover shined through as a ray of hope. Anonymous New York City .... I HAVE TO SAY THERE ARE SOME FACTS IN THERE THAT ARE NOT TRUE, ESPECIALLY ABOUT VILLA DE LEYVA. I had been there several times In the last three years and it ili really a nice town and you have overgeneralized and given false information in many cases. I cannot hide the fact that there is a war in my country and that some areas are 22 COLOMBIA V3N6 dangerous for foreigners and for Colombians as well. But I can also say that it is a wonderful place and I hope some days things may change. Colombian student Forwarded by a reader in Vermont THE FATE OF THE FU I APPLAUD YOUR MAGAZINE FOR BRINGING THE PLIGHT OF THE FUTALEUFU RIVER TO THE ATTENTION OF YOUR READERS (THE FALL OF THE Fu). HOWEVER, I QUESTION HOW WE AS AMERICANS (4.6% OF THE WORLD POPU- LATION WHO CONSUME 25% OF THE WORLD'S ENERGY) CAN ARGUE AGAINST AN ENERGY COMPANY IN CHILE WANTING TO EXPLOIT THEIR RESOURCES TO THE FULLEST. Are we not the country whose President and Congress just approved dri lling in the Alaskan Arctic Refuge? Did that same president not appoint Colin Powell's son Michael to head the FCC, so that he could give Rupert Murdoch permission to own two television stations in NYC. As if AOL Time Warner, Fox, CNN, The New York Post and so much more was not enough. I guess it may not be enough if the administration wants to ensure that environmental issues (or issues about media antitrust and monopolies) do not get much coverage in the world's largest TV market. Maybe you didn't know this because you are in that market? Furthermore, a few years ago when I questioned one of the people involved in saving the Fu about the use of crosslinked plastics in his kayaks, which made them neither repairable or recyclable he shocked me by saying he would video damaged boats going over waterfalls and let them disappear down the river. I am sure things like that give the Chileans a soft spot for Americans. I love paddling and hope that there continue to be unspoiled rivers like the Fu. It is time that as Americans we start leading by example: Consuming less energy and putting our planet ahead of corporate or personal profits. You live in an area which is good in that way. NYC is one of the places where people live in small apartments, ride public transportation and seem to truly appreciate their escapes to green places.
