Strokkur Geyser, also known as Butter Churn, throws boiling water 20 meters into the air every eight minutes. A geyser is a spring that shoots intermittent jets of hot water and steam through nar- row channels from deep in the earth's crust. When geothermal activity causes the water at depth to rise above boiling point, the water erupts to the surface. The word geyser came from the famous Geysir, which is located near Butter Churn. Iceland has more high-temperature geothermal activity and hot springs than any other region on earth.
