The book examines the new global community and explores how the very things pulling us closer together are also proving wedges of divisiveness. 8> THE ISLAMIC MOVEMENT IN NORTH AFRICA Francoie Burgat and William Dowell, 1993, Middle East Studies Center at the University of Texas at Austin) Burgat's book, first published in France in 1988 and translated and updated by Dowell for its first US publication in 1993, provides original source material from most of the leading contemporary Islamic thinkers. Though out of print, it is possible to find copies on certain websites. 9> REMEMBERING GOD: REFLECTIONS ON ISLAM (Charles Le Gai Eaton, 2000, ABC) Written by a Westerner who became a Muslim in 1958, this book explores clear- ly the concepts of jihad, democracy, women's issues, as well as many other philosophical roots of Islam. 10> THE BATTLE FOR GOD Karen Armstrong, 2000, Ballantine Armstrong documents the rise of the fundamentalist movements in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, focusing on the United States, Israel, Iran and Egypt. She traces the roots and causes of radicalism and argues that attempts to stamp them out have historically resulted in more virulent strains. 11> THE PROPHET AND THE PHARAOH (Gilles Kepel, 1993, University of California Press) A look at the early days of the Muslim brotherhood and the influence of Sayed Qtba (sp TK) who provided the movement with its first ideology directed toward violence. 12> THE GREAT GAME: The Struggle for empire in Central Asia* (Peter Hopkirk, 1994, Kodansha International) An extremely readable adventure yarn and the definitive book on the British experience in Afghanistan. 13> A PEACE TO END ALL PEACE' (David Fromkin, 2001, Owl Books) This book details how Europe carved up the Arab world following World War 1- good background reading on the region. *These books are being reissued in the wake of recent events.
