She has reported on her wanderings in China, Southeast Asia, India, Nepal, Central Asia, Mexico, Central and Eastern Europe, as well as on hidden domestic gems, for blue, National Geographic Traveler, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, New York Times, Travelocity and other publications. In two and a half decades of wandering, Don George has visited more than 60 countries; he has also worked as a teacher in Athens, a trans- lator in Paris and a TV talk show host in Tokyo (To Go or Not to Go, page 39). Currently, Don is the Global Travel Editor for Lonely Planet Publications and writes the weekly Traveler at Large column for lonelyplanet.com. He advises on the publisher's literary travel series, "Journeys," and is developing a number of special projects, including Lonely Planet Conversations, a series of live events with notable authors and adven- turers. He also appears frequently on television and radio as a travel expert, and often lectures at conferences around the world. Directly following the 9/11 attack, Bruce hid out in Humboldt County, California's Lost Coast, took his mom hitchhiking across south- west Ireland then explored Eastern Europe using Budapest as a base. In his essay (To Go or Not to Go, page 41) Bruce proposes that we can't change fate by rushing into it. Best to wait, leisurely, for it to overtake you-preferably in the company of friends. His 2002 refocus is on US wan- dering-American Detour style-and his next book, Globetrotter Dogma, which will be celebrated by a springtime cross-USA book-tour-odyssey. Bruce's other publications include The Frugal Globetrotter and In Search of Adventure. His animated multimedia travel presentations-held at universities and seminar centers nationwide-capture the essence of circling the globe many times, freestyle. For information on his travel pres- entation visit AmericanDetour.com Edward Hasbrouck tackles the question of global mobility in today's new world (To Go or Not to Go, page 38). To back up his opinions on the subject, Edward has a lifetime of travel experience. He has traveled throughout Central and South Asia, including the Afghanistan-Pakistan border regions. Among his favorite cities are Tashkent, Uzbekhistan, and Lahore, Pakistan. "Americans had only just begun to discover the special warmth of the welcome they-like all visitors-receive from people in this part of the world," he says. "It will be espe- cially sad for me if travelers are scared away from Central Asia just as it was opening the door to foreign visitors." Edward Hasbrouck is the author of the Practical Nomad series of travel how-to and advice books: The Practical Nomad: How to Travel Around the World (2000) and The Practical Nomad Guide to the Online Travel Marketplace (2001).
