NC 28806 828-488-2176 NANTAHALA OUTDOOR CENTER The New York abstract expressionist painter Willem de Kooning said that a good painting should take you on a journey . This ethos is integral to our painting process . We start from a fixed point, but go where the work takes us . The result is always a surprise . For us , painting is a controlled yet spontaneous exercise, the overall process being as important as the finished works themselves . Not all paintings are equal in beauty or are successful as works of art . Whereas some artists choose to work and labor over one painting for many days and months , honing and polishing the finished product, we work quickly, editing our works after the event with an objective eye . We have a set routine for our painting that basically entails having our equipment in place and then working as fast and spontaneously as possible to capture the immediacy of the moment . Whether we are working under water , in the jungl e , desert or even the North Pole the basic systems are the same : Good equipment and clothing are essenti al whether you are at minus 63°F, plus 95°F, or 95 meters underwater . Each environment presents a particular challenge to be overcome . Despite our paintbrushes and water bottles freezing , the biggest threat to painting in polar regions comes from frostbite . We worked in thin fleece-touch gloves and had to stop constantly to warm our hands in our large overmitts . We had to keep moving . If we stood still , our toes would quickly become numb , and then freeze . The bear seemed curious . After watching us paint for a short while he rounded the ridge and began to approach us . Then he started to run. We shouted over to Eugene and he told us to stand firm . The bear was now running ful l tilt in our direction . Suddenly he switched direction from right to left and slowed to a lope . As he circled us we saw his objective. He was heading to the open water and six seals , 50 yards to our left . We watched and waited as he moved toward the water' s edge . The bear crashed into the icy water and swam across the short patch of open sea . On the ice he watched us , his breath steaming in the golden light . As the bear settled a distance from the water' s edge , he continued to watch our movements with keen intensity. His fur steamed and created illusions of fire as the sun dipped low on the horizon. He then began to roll and play on the ice . We were trans fixed . The bear was now compl etely relaxed, lying forward on his forepaws switching his attention from us to the seals . We realized then that it does not get any better than this : watching a predator in his wild and natural habitat. We felt we had intruded far enough into this bear' s hunting domain and retreated to a safer distance to await the return of the helicopter . As we moved away , the bear approached the water , once more silhouetted against the haze of ice , sea and sky . On our way back to camp , we circled the bear for the last time and watched him bounding across the ice, a magnificent free anima l running wild. •
