how to use this guide Step-by-step instructions on how to find your ideal trip using the b I u e Adventure + Gear Guide 1 2 3 4 Do you have a craving to journey to a particular point on the map? Maybe you've been surfing in Indonesia, and now you'd like to check out other adventures in that magical archipelago. Do you have a passion for a particular activity? Maybe it's moun- tain biking, maybe it's scuba diving. This guide is designed to help you find the information you need. You can compare trips one to another-apples to apples. Or, maybe better said, paddles to paddles, summits to summits. Start with your passion then go find the adventure of your dreams. Finding a trip by destination If a particular destination is calling your name, then look to the TRIP MAP, page 8 (insert). Zero in on a continent, or a more specific locale, and see if there's a trip at that destination. Or check out the TRIP CHART, page 76, where all trips included in this guide are listed alphabetically by region, and match your per- sonal parameters. Finding a trip by adventure activity This guide is organized primarily by adventure activity. We have identified nine major activities: (mountaineering, rock climbing, surfing, snow sports, mountain biking, sea kayaking, river rafting, safari and scuba diving). Start with Cont[injents, page 8 (insert), choose your adventure. Flip to that page. There you will find an overview of the activity and our take on the world's best des- tinations to enjoy it, a highlighted * blue pick trip * which we consider the best of its kind in the world. Finding a trip by personal parameters: sport specific experience, gear, cost, time available, fitness level To find the adventure right for you, determine your budget, sport specific expe- rience, fitness level, amount of gear you're prepared to acquire (or currently own) and free time you have for travel. Then match these determinants to each trip, which has been rated according to the blue Rating System (see opposite). Finding the gear you need Most adventures are gear intensive, so for each adventure sport, we've provid- ed a full packing list of gear. Read carefully! Sometimes the difference between an idyllic adventure and a miserably painful one can turn on having the right piece of gear. Imagine an Amazon trek without breathable rain gear, a white- water rafting trip without water shoes, and the resulting blisters. Try flying to Indonesia with your surfboard, only to find that you've forgotten a strap or soft rack. You'll be left with a long hike to the nearest break as the taxis whiz away without you. In each gear list all items have been tested in the field . Specific prod- uct recommendations will enable you to get packed up for an adventure planned on short notice. > > > > o 000 @ GGGG •••••
