» > work @ b I u e Also located in the Adirondacks, Mt Marcy, New York's highest peak, is a favorite with hikers, skiers and boarders. As with the rest of the Adirondacks State Park, you can register at booths located at major access points and junctions. You may want to use crampons on ascent near the top of the trail, especially during icy conditions. At seven miles, the Van Hoevenberg is the shortest trail to the mountain and it should take four to five hours to get to the top. From New York, take a two-hour flight to Lake Placid (through Albany), or a five-hour drive. Take Interstate 87 North and take exit 30 to the Adirondack Northway. Follow Route 9 for 2 miles to Route 73. Drive through Keene and Lake Placid . Turn right onto Adirondack Loj road and the Loj is five miles down the road. For more information, con- tact the Adirondack Ski Touring Council, 518-523-1365. For trail reports on Marcy, consult the Adirondack Mountain Club, 518-668-4447, www.adk.org. MAD RIVER GLEN, WAITSFIELD, VT Mad River Glen is a classic, old-school skier's mountain: winding, narrow trails, antique chairlifts and almost no snowmaking. Skiers making their f irst foray into the backcountry wi ll find this prime learning grounds-the single chairlift that runs up the mountain lets you head out into the woods at your whim to practice navigation. Snowboarders aren't yet allowed (it's that kind of a down-home place), but Mad River is a nonprofit cooperative that has rock-bottom lift tickets. The best time to go is late January to March. Take Interstate 95 and switch to Interstate 91 in New Haven. Get onto Interstate- 89 at White River Junction, and exit at Middlesex (Exit 9). Make a left onto Route 2 East and then a right onto Route 100B. Follow Route 100B, which turns into Route 100, to Waitsfield. Go right onto Route 17 West and con- tinue until you reach Mad River Glen. Contact Mad River Glen, 802-496- 3551, www.madriverglen .com. for more information. Note: You would have to drive really fast to make this trip in five hours. Six-plus hours is more likely. TUCKERMAN AND HUNTINGTON RAVINES, NH Part of Mt Washington in the White Mountains, these two jagged cuts of terrain are backcountry classics. The ravines are situated in the Cutler River Drainage on the southeast shou lder of the moun- tain, and their deepest snowdrifts can be 55 feet on average, even in spring. Most people start out at Pinkham Notch Visitor Center, on v .... ~~ ... -t.~ f;\....- o "\ 0 the Appalachian Trail, and hike out to the ravine for entry. Bring all your gear and food along. If you want to camp, purchase a permit ($8 per person) from Pinkham Notch for the Hermit Lake Shelters. It's a cool- though at times crowded- scene, but the people are always friendly and the tricks excellent to watch . But be careful, Mt Washington has some of the worst winter weather in the world, severe avalanches and the slope of the headwall would be at least a double-black diamond at any resort. Take Interstate 95 North to Interstate 91 North (by New Haven). Take Interstate 91 North to Route 302 East and then to Route 3 North. Take 115 North and in Jefferson hop onto Route 2 East. At Gorham, turn onto Route 16 South, and you will reach Pinkham Notch Center 11 miles up the road . The trailhead is right at the center. Contact the Appalachian Mountain Club, 603-466-2725, and www.tucker- < o man.org, for more information on permits and snow conditions. Note: Depending on the weather, the drive to the trailhead can take (' up to eight hours. blue Media Ventures seeks qualified applicants for full-time positions in our New York office; relating to blue's publishing and emerging Internet business. two years experience selling advertising for consumer print and online. mnrkpllinn and/or nager »> > Seeking an in ividual with business management and/or account- ing skills and experience.
