The pack has a snowshoe/snowboard carry sleeve, side pockets for skis and a big-pack internal frame that makes carry ing heavy loads easy and comfortable. Atl as builds the packs to last, stitching Duratek (the tough material used in the decking of their snowshoes) into high-abrasion areas such as the carry sleeves and ski pockets. And since snowshoeing through the back- country is hot , sweaty work, the Fast Pack comes with an (unfortunately, uninsulated) internal hydration system. Don't be fooled by the Ti kka's unbeliev- ably compact size (not much bigger than the 3 AAA batteries that power it), this head lamp provides big-time illumination . The Ti kka harnesses LED technology to provide a strong white light on one- tenth the battery power of traditional lamps. The LED bul bs are vir- tually unbreakable and the lamp can last for 150 hours on a sin- gle set of batteries. Since the Ti kka's light is less concent rated than that of tradit ional lamps, it isn't ideal for route fi nding or late- night trail explorati on. But for up-close activit ies like trai l walking, camp setup and midnight rock cl imbs, the Tikka is hard to beat. Petzl America, 877-807-3805, www.petzl.com. $35
