blue is a wonderful thi ng. I was attracted to the photo of Julia Butterfly Hill on the cover (April/May 2000) and although I never purchase mag- azines, and had never even seen blue before, I brought this home to read. Before I even got a chance to read the article, I saw a short film on Channel 13 interviewing her. I was a changed woman, moved to tea rs. Her actions are among the most powerful actions this planet has seen in recent history and remind me of the actions of Jesus. I would like to respond to the statement by Pacific Lumber that Uley don't negotiate with people who are breaking the law: Silent protest is not illegall Madeline Droege New York, NY Your article on Julia Butterfly Hill (April/May 2000) was much needed to further awareness against capita listic greed and destruction. She is a lovely woman who shou ld be president! However, I feel that you insulted her with that sex question. Especially since her own father is an Evangelist preacher and look what a beautiful person he has created in God's imagel Barbara Gaylord, MI Although I find the premise and articles of your magazine intriguing, I would not subscribe to any magazine that called itself pro-environment but included ads for SUVs. The two are entirely antithetica l-you might as well be advertising for a redwood logging company. SUVs, to my mind, pose one of the biggest threats around to long-term life on this planet. I also recogn ize the difficulties of making a magazine work in terms of advertising revenue, but I hope that you can find a way to con- tinue putting together a magazine without relying on advertisers such as these. Until that point, I can't subscribe with a good conscience. Louis Faassen Belchertown, MA The best words fa ll short of describing blue. I just tell people to find it and subscribe. I found the first issue while living in Vail and my world opened up. Before then I had no idea such a wonderful world existed. My life has changed in the best ways since. The anniversary issue (June/July 2000) is filled with soul and life and celebration of individual life, like mine. I finally feel like I can live at the speed I'm thinking, at least while I'm still floating on mechanical and adrenaline high. And I have blue to thank for helping me find the drive. Brian Wood Boulder, CO Your Letters are both inspirational and eye-opening. Too often I get caught up in my day-ta-day responsibilities to keep in mind that there is a greater goal to living-to get out and live life. I'm inspired by your commitment to this goal and praise you for living beyond the value of the all-mighty buck. Live the dream! Alex Naseef New York, NY Great magazine. I am a big traveler-adventurer at heart, yet life has found me working too much and traveling (business travel, no adventure, although I look for it everywhere) far too much. I find the greatest escapism in blue, and often save each issue for those long hours trapped inside 36,000 feet above. Keep up the great work, it keeps me real. Sam Brenner Seattle, WA • I read the Letter (June/July 2000) and am taking your advice-Life @the Speed of Thoughtl I just came back from the most extreme two weeks of my life in the Dominican Republic where I discovered kitesurfing. Located in Caberete, the windsurfing hub of the world, is a kitesurfing school called Dare2Fly. I am now seriously considering moving there to continue my trai ning and become an instructor for theml Marie Laure Frere New York, NY I'm a longtime fan of blue, and a former professional skateboarder who has matured from a strict diet of vertical skate mags into publications such as blue. I am 31 and still make the time to stoke myself on my #1 pastime. However, in addition to skateboarding, I mountain bike, back- pack, surf and snowboard. I know that this is NOT unique, but it leads to my editorial thought: With the increasing age of the avid skateboard- ing population, I'd like to suggest including skateboarding as one of the highlight activities (in a tasteful/mature presence-unlike most current vertical skate mags).
