But three months from now, when you're clutching blue in your sweaty hand, you'll thank us for suggesting the Warren County Bikeway, an 11-mile path that runs north from the upstate town of Glens Falls to Lake George, New York State's most bitchin' swimming hole. Surfaced with the tightest, smoothest asphalt aggregate this side of the Pecos Gustifiable point of pride for the Warren County Highway Department), the bikeway takes you through Glens Falls neighborhoods, past a catheter factory, and then into the woods for several miles of ... woods. It ends at the lake's public Million Dollar Beach, where the swimming-and the views- are very, very nice, although it gets very crowded in summer. Though the grade of this old rail right-of-way can ramp up to 10 percent in places, it's generally a very gentle three percent. CONTACT THE WARREN COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT AT 518-623-5576 FOR MORE DETAILS. Imagine skating for miles on country roads past rolling hills, fields and farm- houses-without having to compete with motorized vehicles. Welcome to Amish Country. This 946-mile region in Pennsylvania is home to 18,000 Amish and Mennonite people-both groups that avoid modem technology. The Amish don't use any mechanized devices. They use horse-drawn carriages instead of cars and plow their fields using horses. They don't even ride bicycles. In-line skates, however, seem to be just fine, and you may see children skating for pleasure and transport. The Mennonites are slightly more up on the times: they use farming machinery, ride bikes and some drive cars (although mostly black ones). Ephrata is the heart of Amish Country and has a few quaint hotels. To get there, take an Amtrak train (www.amtrak.com) from Penn Station to Lancaster. Then catch a bus or a cab to Ephrata. The Red Rose Transit Company runs buses daily (717-397-4246). Or drive directly into Amish par- adise on the Pennsylvania Tumpike to Exit 21 , then follow Route 222 south and watch for the sign to Ephrata. Zephyr Inline Skate Tours does great three-day in-line trips (888-sk8-tour, www.skatetour.com) out of Ephrata in the spring and fall. The best thing about going with Zephyr, apart from the fact that they're lots of fun and organize every last thing, is that they even have a couple of local Amish boys as skate guides.
