SABAH, MALAYSIA The next Eco-Challenge, scheduled for August 21, 2000, will include jungle trekking, river paddling in inflatable kayaks (swift water) and in Murut canoes (flat water), sailing in Perahu outrigger canoes, canyoning using fixed ropes, scuba diving, mountain biking and caving, You can watch it, but unfortunately it's too late to register. The location forĀ· the Eco-Challenge 2001 will be revealed on the closing day of the Malaysia Race, September 2, 2000. HOW TO RACE AN ECO-CHALLENGE: 1. Form a four-person, coed team. 2. Comply with the Nationality Rule: all team members must race under one flag. Each member must have proof of citizenship or at least five years of continuous legal residency (work permits don't count). 3. Ditch your assistant crew, none are permitted. HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Details about the racecourse are not revealed until you arrive at the race venue. All four team members must cross the finish line together. The entry fee per team for the Patagonia Race was US$10,000. For the Borneo Race it was US$12,500. You get the picture. But you don't have to pay in one lump sum, you can pay in three installments. For fees of future races, contact Eco-Challenge Productions (310-399-3080, www.ecochallenge.com). Each team's entry fee includes accommodation and limited insurance for all four team members.
