distracted, even delirious. According to Karen Lundgren from Team USA, "When you're sleep-deprived, the person you really are is completely on the surface. You can't be fake. If you pretend to be a team player and you're really not, it's going to come through. The importance of good team dynamics in this race is critical. A lot of teams just come unraveled." People who hear what the athletes endure sometimes
question their motivation, their priorities-even their sanity. Yet this two-week outward struggle and inward journey just might spare the athletes many unnecessary years on the therapist's divan, or the indignity of some kooky ashram in Oregon, or a brief and fashionable
flirtation with Prozac. Burnett's take is this: "People who judge these athletes as crazy are, in my opinion, the crazy ones. To spend 50 or 60 hours a week in a cubicle, staring at a computer screen-that's crazy. You can't find meaning inside a laptop." So tune in to the two-part Discovery Channel broadcast on
April 9 and 10, and check out the featured performers. You'll find the thrill seekers, the flesh and bone and blood of the sport, the daring men and women who, as athletes, lash the whole thing together.
