Quiet innovations in wind management have been happening on the seas and mountains of the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii and Florida. Over the last five years, surfers, windsurfers, snowboarders and skiers have been playing around with kites. What they've come up with are kites that pull them up mountains and past breaking waves to surf and ride. Other people attach kites to wakeboards, in line skates or ice skates. Still others kite with carts or sawed-off skis to go fast overland and kite for the sake of kiting.
