AFRICA FOCUS ADDITIONAL REPORTING: JEFF BARBEE Safari, in the Swahili language of Kenya and Tanzania, means Journey. Before embarking on an African safari there are two things to keep in mind: One, that a journey is only as good as you make it. There are countless types of safaris to choose from, ranging from rustic to luxurious. Educate yourself before you go and choose the safari right for you. Two, that any journey in Africa is an adventure, so leave your agenda at home and prepare to venture into the unknown. Nature is unpredictable. No matter how much you pay for a safari, you are putting yourself out there, in the domain of wild animals and quite naturally in the path of danger. A safari may seem like a passive, voyeuristic pursuit, but your very presence in the African bush makes you an active participant in the ecological ebb and flow of life . You become part of the food chain. A safari will teach you to get in touch with your instincts-particularly the most primal ones such as survival . Here are some things to consider in your search for the perfect safari. how much do you want to pay? Safaris fall into four economic categories. The cheapest way to go is on an overland safari, where you'll go with twenty or so other travelers in a large vehicle throughout a number of countries. Second is the participatory safari, where you'll help pitch your tent and cook your own food. The third category is the deluxe safari. You'll camp in pre- set tents and eat food prepared for you by the guides and cooks. The final category is the luxury safari, an upscale affair involving lodges, red roses and sometimes even butlers. A safari with the Adventure Center might cost you US$50-BO a day, an overland trip with Exodus Overland Expeditions might cost you US$300 a day and a luxury fly-in safari with Abercrombie & Kent may cost you US$500 a day.
