.. lIiIlliiiiill .. 1illlf1 (SCRIBNER PUBUSHING, 1999, S26) A man travels for nine years on a personal journey. Destination? Pollution. Earth Odyssey chronicles the author's efforts to get to a ground zero appraisal of what spews what where, and in what ways dif- ferent industrial waste disposal schemes end up changing the environment. Brilliantly researched and compelingly explained. This man could run for office. Travelogues have the potential to be self-aggran- dizing character studies combined with had-to- be-there plot lines. Not so with O'Hanlon's In Trouble Again. His goal is to reach the highest mountain in the Amazon via a river route accessi- ble only by dug-out canoe. it is a long, difficult trip, seemingly without precedent. The trip's intrigue centers on unavoidable encounters with a tribe called the Yomani, supposedly the fiercest and most violent culture on the planet. Within the tribe, even the most mundane of social interac- tions involves combative rituals designed to leave significant facial scarring. What really goes on way out there is best captured right in here. TRUE AT FIRST LIGHT BY ERNEST HEMINGWAY True at First Light exists in the dull glow between fact and fiction, man and his myth. Set on safari at the foot of Mt Kilimanjaro in 1953, the book should not be read as a complete manuscript but rather as a collection of sentences that have yet to endure the scrutiny of their owner. Passages on Kenyan politics, lion hunting, an affair with a Masai woman and remembrances of youth read as the skeletons of terse short stories- arguably Hemingway's greatest form. Edited by his son Patrick, the manuscript is obviously in it's early stages. it serves as an enthralling portrait of a style in progress and not a book that should be judged against the prose of Hemingway's master works.-Chad Brealey to kirula})})illgs, it's the ttltimate traveler's advisorv. lrom killer l}ees w The ULTIl\IATE Guide to Cascade Adventure Co. true to the source outdoor hemp: PHOTOS {clockwis;! from tCOlI ~ftl: S~ief byXandi Kreu!td='.
