climbers from around the country gathered to battle their way up the competition routes, and the flavor in the air was uniquely New York. "I was terrified," said one climber, a veteran competitor from the ever-mellow state of Colorado. "The crowd was so loud it sounded like we were stepping out into a huge stadium." When the last competitor, hometown hero Vinokur,
emerged, the crowed yelled, "Represent! Hook it up yo." As Vinokur moved beyond the winning high point to
grab the very last hold on the wall, the hip-hop call and response between the MC and the crowd was deafening: "Is Brooklyn in the house?" "Hooooooooooo!" screamed the legions of urban
climbers who were making it perfectly clear that the sport of climbing will never be the same.
