We had to angle our heads so we could breathe. The crawl space was at best two
and a half feet high-and water filled most of it. All around us small stalactites draped from the ceiling, piercing the water and creating impassable columns in most directions. Jim Hewitt, the veteran caver of our five-man group, had ventured first so we knew there had to be a combination of bobs and weaves that would get us through. It was difficult to see, but somehow I managed to wrestle my way through the maze.
With a deep hreath I suhmerged to duck a final low arch and popped up into the next room.
