patrol ship. Apparently, the Mounties had seen our American seaplane beside the expensive Maple Leaf in a remote inlet and thought we were running drugs. Some of the conservationists offer up conspiracy theories that the RCMP may have rumored connections to the logging industry. The following morning our seaplane lifts off the glassy surface of the Khutze Inlet and heads due south-home. Two weeks later, bumper-to-bumper traffic delays my kayak run down the South Fork of the Snoqualmie River outside of Seattle. The put-in is littered with kayaks and canoes holding purple, blue, red and yellow paddlers fighting for the same wave under a rusted bridge. I paddle through yet another traffic jam and past the houses that line the river wondering if I would have passed a bear a century before.
