Don James
The photographs of Don James, dentist by profession and surfer/lifeguard at heart, document the original California surf culture. In the words of C.R. Stecyk's introduction "with no commercial expectations or potential media exposure to cloud matters, Don recorded only what he felt interesting ... a highly personal depiction of a group of his friends ... they pioneered activities that were absolutely indecipherable to the greater culture at large. From 1936 to 1942, they lived and thrived on a lifestyle that had never existed before."
