During a series of runs, the best Breedlove did was 517 miles per hour. er, reen ThrustSSC, a black blur, hit 728 mile s pe r hour. a dull "whump." The roar of the car's jet engine sounded like fury and unimaginable power. The timekeeper announced, "Provisional mach number on that run was 1.007." Former record holder Richard Noble looked like he had just had a religious experience. "A supersonic run. A genuine supersonic run," he said grinning from ear to ear. "It's a fantastic moment. This is actually the first-ever timed supersonic run of a car in history." "The car doesn't leap in the air and explode .... lt is possible to drive supersonic. We did it," said Green at a press conference. They did it indeed. But why? The British effort cost nearly $5 million. To what end? There is little to rio practical application of the technology that allowed the first man to drive supersonic. Breedlove may have explained it in a recent interview: "Everyone focuses on those few seconds as some nirvana. But if you don't enjoy the journey every single day, doing what you love to do, then you miss the point of this time around on the planet."-Dan Morrison 11
