SUREEOCUS __ ~ __ ~~~ r~~~~ rocky point. hawaii.1976 south mission beach jetty. 1978 west indies. 1970 everyone knew everyone. Everyone surfed, everyone played football. Although I only spent four years there, it feels more like home, or Where I'm From, than anywhere else in the world. At 14, I was giving surf lessons at the local YMCA and surfed for Con Surfboards, a proud member of the CC Rider surf team (Claude Codgens). The space program faltered. As we packed and left Cocoa Beach, surfboards went short. I chopped the nose off a couple I'd love to have now (Miki Dora Cat, CC Rider, Weber mini gun). We left for the left coast. I spent a few years in and around Huntington Beach, working for various surfboard companies. I was invited to the Smirnoff-Pro-AM surf contest at Sunset Beach (18 surfers from around the world were invited). I later moved to San Diego to attend college-it seemed to be the college that offered the best surfing potential. Somewhat by accident one summer, I discovered graphic design. Most of the creative energy I had put into surfing now went toward graphic design. I started with designing Transworld Skateboarding magazine, then Snowboarding, Beach Culture, SURFER and Raygun. After a couple years of designing SURFER magazine, I quit to concentrate on my freelance design business. I opened a small studio in Del Mar, where I did work for clients like Nike, Pepsi, David Byrne, Burton Snowboards and Gary Linden Surfboards. bob carson. 1999 bob carson was a member of the cocoa beach surfing elite in the late 1960s that included claude codgens. bruce valuzzi and gary propper. bob later shaped custom surfboards for some of the world's best surfers including world champion shaun tomson. rabitt bartholmew. and a very young kelly slater. bob and his wife denise now reside in the caribbean where bob continues to shape boards. as well as run his own yacht brokerage. If you are traveling in the caribbean. and need a custom board. look him up at: southerntrades@ caribsurf.com
