But as surfing has grown more and more popular, crowds waves have also grown. Surfing, for me, became fighting for a chance to ride the good waves. ,....-"'UL,'V Kerbox the early 1990s, a group of surfers in Hawaii realized that the waves had become way too rrn.AJl1c.11 legends Buzzy Kerbox, Laird Hamilton and Darrick Doerner decided to leave the crowds behind for the big waves of the outer reefs. Their idea was to use Buzzy's 1S-foot Zodiac to tow the standing on the board, onto the swell before it began to break, giving the surfer a big head sta wave. The tow-in instantly allowed them to ride more waves in the 10-15 foot range than dreamed possible. Critics called their innovations not pure, not right, cheating. Others said that taking away the most challenging part of surfing: the wave-catching element. But BUZZY, Laird believe it's being there that's important, not how you get there.
