But what do the locals do? They go to Block Island. Season: July to October. Setup: Left point break. Conditions: When the storm gets too close the situation deteriorates rapidly. Hazards: The surfers who surf there are trying to get away from you. Central America THEN: Pavones, Costa Rica NOW: La libertad, EI Salvador Now that everybody and his sister has surfed Pavones, it's lost its adventurous appeal. But Costa Rica is not the only country benefiting from exposure to both Northern and Southern Hemisphere swells. La Libertad provides adventurous Central-American-bound surfers with a fine point break in the tropics. Season: Year round. Setup: Rocky right point. Conditions: High 70s in the water. Hazards: The water is sometimes polluted. Lawlessness persists. Watch out for bullets. North Africa THEN: Agadir, Morocco 9 10 11 NOW: Corralejo, Fuertaventura, Canary Islands Desert surfaris down the Moroccan coast have always provided Europeans with an escape valve. But the Canary Islands, iust off the North African coast, have more reliable, more concentrated surf breaks--ond a much better nightlife. Season: November to March. Setup: Point-like reefs and beach break. Conditions: 60s in the water, 70s on land. Hazards: The surf can get very strong and the reefs tend to be shallow. Southern Exposure THEN: Punta Rocas, Peru NOW: Pichilemu, Chile Surfing has been part of Peruvian culture since before the World Contest was held there in 1966, but the big, consistent, cold barrels of Chilean waters are the outer reaches of South American surfing today. Season: Austral summer. Setup: Powerful, barreling waves over sand and rock points, primarily lefts. Conditions: Full suits necessary. Hazards: Strong currents and urchin-infested reefs. Island Soul THEN: Oahu, Hawaii NOW: Kauai, Hawaii When an 18-year-old kid from one of Hawaii's outer islands almost wins the Pipe Masters (pro surfing's most spectacular and demanding eventl, you've got to wonder where he's been practicing. Kauai's got a north shore too, with plenty of Island Style and without all the touring pros. Season: Winter. Setup: Mostly reef breaks. Conditions: As warm as your bathtub. Hazards: Surfers who went there twenty years ago to have it to themselves would like to keep it that way. The Final Frontier THEN: Westport, Washington NOW: Ocean Cape, Yakutat, Alaska Most of the "locals" in the Pacific Northwest are disgruntled Californians trying to ride their little piece of the Pacific in solitude. But as California's surfing population has bloated, the exodus has increased and the hardcores have once again moved onward and upward. Season: Summer to fall. Setup: Left point-like headland. .
