Local wildlife seemed alternately interested and annoyed by the race. Seals and penguins settled in the middle of the course for optimal views, while large skua birds dive-bombed contestants for invading their territory. In his first marathon, 28-year-old Scott Dvorak of World Team Sports (a non-profit organization in North Carolina that involves the disabled in athlet ic activities) won the race in 2:23: 11. Masami Miyahana of Japan won the women's race in 3:07 :46. Other contestants in the international field included David Nicholson, a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic bicycle team, and France's Michel Ribet, a former participant in the around-the-world Whitbread boat race.-Michael Cervieri photo: victah
