THE BABY G "It's too cool. I'm not giving the watch back when I'm done: the review er insisted. And while his desire to keep the watch may be the best endorsement a watch manufacturer could dream of. it could cost him-or his editor-a job. Casio wants its Baby G back. The new Casio Baby G is a translucent digital watch in pale colors. denot ing that it is the feminine version of the men's G-Shock. none of which affected the (male) reviewer's determination. Like the men's G-Shock we tested. the Baby G sports a double Velcro strap to support the weak link (conventional pins) of this notoriously durable watch. The inner collar attaches to the outer band. ensuring that the watch stays on in case one of the pins holding it breaks-or else in case the plastic fastener on the outer band pops open. This is the sort of double security that sealed G-Shock's reputation. Since the mid-eighties Casio has been rocking the wrist watch world by cou pling accurate innovative modules-its name for the computer that runs the clock data base (chronograph. alarms and countdown timer)-with tough thermoplastic. stainless steel and mineral glass casings. Then. a few years ago. Casio decided to redesign its shock-proof watches-marketing them as not just a sports item but a fashion one as well. Baby G's kicker is a series of dot matrix animations that show a micro snowboard er ollieing when the light is pushed. Push once and she wipes out. try again. and she may well stick the landing. More amazingly. in "time" mode this animation displays the current day in Night at the Movies style where animated characters generate from one dot. The dots slowly expand and swell to spell "MO" or "TU: "WE: "TH" .. .. The process is reversed and repeated in a continuous syncopated rhythm. In a category where almost every product looks alike. it's understandable why the reviewer keeps saying he won't return the watch-and why Casio wants it back.
