"Adventure is an attitude. It's a way of getting up in the morning and trying to go a little farther, trying something new, reaching further than you would normally reach." "Yes, but I 'on't think they will . " "DO YOU F r WHERE THEY MAY KILL .E?" "Then don't go." "I CANNOT LET YOU GO ALONE BECAUSE THEN THEY WILL KILL YOU AND I WILL BE TO BLAME." "Then come with me and we will visit the fighters." WHAT IS ADVENTURE? thl" try.ng ·.ornldh'''g r'lr!'IJ Dialogue from the latest Harrison Ford thril ler? No, just another page from a travel guide written by Robert Young Pelton, author of Fielding's The World's Most Dangerous Places. In researching the second edition of the book, Pelton and his friends went searching for hostages in Kashmir, flew with Russian mercenaries in Sierra Leone and had lunch with the Taliban in Afghanistan. Not exactly the itinerary of your standard travel writer. Interoiewed at his office in Redondo Beach, California, Pelton-amidst slu:fboards, African statues and photos /i'om Borneo-spoke about dangerous places, how to have more meaning/tt l traoel e.xperien ces and holV to put more adven ture in your l/e. If you have two weeks vacation and you want to use it in a meaningful fashion, don't just look at the tourism industry to provide the answers. Why not work in a refugee camp in Somalia, learn how they pick coffee in Kenya or go sailing with fishermen in Vietnam7 Try to learn how the world lives. Adventure is like buying a book with the first chapter written and no ending. You have to have a willingness to write the last chapter yourself, not knowing ahead of time what the ending will be. The more comfortable you can become with the idea of adventure and letting things unfold before you rather than preplanning everything, the more comfortable you are with life. HOW DID you BEGIN YOUR QUEST FOR ADVENTURE? I was the youngest student to attend a special boys' scho&1 in Manitoba. I did one-thousand mile canoe trips that retraced routes of French explorers. I learned there's a big difference between reading about something and actually experiencing it. I realized the importance of a quest or voyage and the joy in trying to achieve it.
