Through deft manipulations of vinyl, the OJ becomes the quintessential traveler, The waxsmith has the unique power to trip time, inventing new songs on the fly while traversing the world's sonic spectrum, fragmenting beats and melodies into new hybrids, England's Ninja Tune label has dedicated itself to the art form now referred to as turntablism, It's not surprising, considering the label's roots: Ninja Tune was started in 1991 by Coldcut. the acclaimed production team credited with making some of the first cutup hip-hop records, Cold Krush Cuts. the label's latest dou­ ble-album compilation, is an excellent compendium of some of the label's recent musical adventures that celebrates the skill of turntablism, Coldcut teams up with proteges PC and Strictly Kev (the foursome call themselves OJ Food) for the (re)arrangements on Pa the honors on Part Two. ' rt One, sliding Japan's noted OJ Krush Part One's track selections vary widely-every- thing from the ruffneck jungle of Pee Zee's "Nightrous" to Up, Bustle & Out's "An Unmarked Grave," which would be perfect on the soundtrack for a spaghetti western. OJ Food's gift for finding the commonalities between seemingly disparate musical ideas makes for an inimitable new sound, end­ ing with a record that just about says it: "If you had to give it a name, what would you call it? Symphonic punk country , more linear, focusing in large part on selections from OJ Vadim's amazing hip-hop tome, USSR Repertoire (also on Ninja Tune).
