~ HOUR RADIUS SKYLINE-TO-THE-SEA TRAil You can use cut-offs to turn part of this 35-mil e, three-day trai l into a day hi ke, but the best way to experience it is to do as its name suggests: Hi ke f rom the Skyline Ridge atop the coastal range down to Waddel l Beach and the Pac ific Ocean. The t rail has campsites amidst redwood forest s, a 70-foot waterfall , two state parks (Castle Rock and Big Basin ) and a 3,000-foot ele- vation change (most of which is downhill ). This is a one-way hike, so you' ll need a ride waiting for you at the endpoint. The hike starts in Castle Rock State Park in the Santa Cruz Mountains. From San Francisco, take Interstate 280 south to Highway 855 to westbound Saratoga Road, which wi ll lead to Highway 9. Take Highway 9 west to Highway 35 (Skyline Boulevard) and head south for 2.5 miles. The park entrance wi ll be on you r right. There are campgrounds at roughly lO-mile interva ls along the trail (the second camp- grou nd is a major site with complete fac iliti es). The state park day fee is $3; camping permits are $10 (parki ng inc luded). If you want to leave a car at the end of the ro ute, Waddell Creek is north of Santa Cruz along Highway 1. Take Highway 92 from Highway 280, and head south on Highway 1 for about 30 miles. Wadde ll Creek is t hree miles past Ano Nuevo State Reserve. For more informati on, contact Castle Rock State Park (408-867-2952, www.parks.ca.gov/central/santacru zlc rsp404.htm) or Big Basin Redwoods State Park (831-338-8860, www.bigbasin.org) . work @ b I u e blue Media Ventures seeks qualified applicants for full-time positions in our New York office relating to blue s publishing and emerging Internet business Advertising Sales > » > Seeking individuals with at least two years experience selling advertising for consumer print and online. Half Dome is probably the most recognizable natural monument in California and this hike comes closest to capturing the ent ire splendor of Yosem ite Nat ional Park. It's a 17-mile grueler (roundtr ip) with a 4,800-foot elevation ga in , so beware. You' ll pass Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls along t he route, as well as mile after mile of wooded wonderland. The dome itself covers the final 200 yards of your hike and its 46-degree pitch is steep enough to requi re steel cable handholds. Def in ite ly not for the faint of heart. Early starts are mandatory for day hikers. For everyone else, Little Yosemite Va lley at the top of Nevada Falls offers a midway campgroun d. Either way, make sure to pack copious amounts of water and food. From San Francisco, take the Bay Bridge to southbound Highway 580 and then the Interstate 205 inter- change to State Road 99 south toward Manteca, where it hits Highway 120. This will take you into the park . Follow the signs to Yosemite Vall ey. Through the Big Oak Fl at entrance station, continue on Highway 120/Big Oak Flat Road, which becomes Southside Drive, for about 12 miles to the day-use parking lot at Curry Vi llage. From there, you can take the f ree Yosemite Va lley shuttle bus to Happy Isles (stop number 16). There is a $20 per car entrance fee at the park gate, which is va lid for seven days. For those planning to camp, a $5 wilderness permit is req uired (ca ll 209- 372-0740 in advance) . For general information contact the National Park Service (209-372-0200, www.yosemite.com).
