The fishing village of Sayulita, on the southwestern corner of Mexico's jungle-swathed state of Nayarit, is framed by a palmy arc of yellow sand dotted with fishermen's pangas, small outboard-powered skiffs. Sayulita's cove faces northwest and is exposed to the Pacific Ocean's winter rage. But by the time the waves from storms in the open ocean make the long journey south, from cold Aleutian waters to the warm Mexican coastline, they have been tamed into tapered smooth lines, perfect for surfing.
