"We knew that if we participated in a demonstration or if we did anything to counterĀ act the Chinese propaganda, we would have to pay a very heavy price. We had been brought up on the horrible accounts of how Tibetans were persecuted during the Uprising of 1959 and how they were killed, imprisoned, and tortured. We knew this and could make the logical conclusion that if we stood up to the Chinese in any way, then we would all end up as dead people. Dead. And our families would also have to pay a big price. But at the same time we were not willing to keep quiet. We felt that it was our moral obligation to support the Dalai Lama's peace proposal. We wanted to tell the world community that the Chinese propaganda was wrong, that the Dalai Lama was right, and that Tibetans were not happy inside Tibet. So we decided to demonstrate. We had precise aims and reasons to do so. " -Jampel Tsering, Tibetan monk
